AI-generated performer Tilly Norwood to lead debut feature film "Misaligned"

Résumé

U.K. studio Particle6 announced that its synthetic actor Tilly Norwood will star in the upcoming movie "Misaligned," aiming to showcase AI's role alongside human filmmakers.

U.K.-based studio Particle6 said its AI-generated performer Tilly Norwood will take the lead role in the forthcoming feature film "Misaligned." The company, which describes itself as an "AI-first and AI-hybrid" developer of movies and TV content, began development of the project on Monday. Norwood, created after roughly 2,000 iterations of an AI tool, is portrayed as an artificial being with access to human memories, set against a "surreal digital world" in the cloud.

Founder Eline van der Velden, a former actor, said the film is intended to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can support premium narrative filmmaking when combined with traditional craft. > "The film will be funny, chaotic and self-aware — very Tilly," she said, adding that it also explores themes of identity and human concerns about AI. > "AI can support premium narrative filmmaking, but only with substantial amounts of human craft, skill, judgment and time. That's not a limitation of the technology. That's the point," van der Velden added.

The project has drawn criticism from industry groups. SAG-AFTRA previously stated that it does not consider Norwood an actor and emphasized that creativity should remain human-centered. The union’s 2023 negotiations with studios resulted in limits on AI use in production, reflecting ongoing concerns about the technology replacing human creatives.
