Active-Duty Navy Sailor Identified as Suspect in Hampton Shooting
Police say 21-year-old Tyshawn Cooper, a sailor stationed on the USS Hampton, shot two civilians before killing himself during a late-night incident in Hampton, New Hampshire.
Police identified Tyshawn Cooper, 21, an active-duty member of the U.S. Navy assigned to the USS Hampton submarine undergoing maintenance at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, as the suspect in a Sunday night shooting in Hampton, New Hampshire. The Attorney General's Office said Cooper shot a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both of whom remain hospitalized, before turning the gun on himself.
Hampton police, New Hampshire State Police and other local agencies responded to 29 Ocean Boulevard around 1:20 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Officers located the two injured victims and later encountered Cooper at the intersection of P Street and Ashworth Avenue. During the encounter, Cooper drew a handgun, fired at an officer and then shot himself in the head, according to officials.
The investigation is ongoing, with state investigators working alongside the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Business owners in the area expressed concern that the incident could affect beach attendance, but no further details on the victims' conditions have been released.
