Toyota invests $3.6 billion to shift Tacoma production from Mexico to Texas

Summary

Toyota will spend $3.6 billion to move Tacoma midsize pickup manufacturing to its San Antonio campus, adding a second assembly line and creating about 2,000 U.S. jobs by 2030.

Toyota Motor announced a $3.6 billion investment to relocate production of its Tacoma midsize pickup truck from its Tijuana plant in Mexico to the company’s San Antonio, Texas, manufacturing campus. The expansion will double the 2.7-million-square-foot facility’s size, add a second vehicle assembly line and raise annual capacity from roughly 200,000 to 350,000 units, creating an estimated 2,000 jobs in the United States.

The company said it will continue operating its Mexican facilities, maintaining Tacoma output at a plant in Guanajuato while the transition to Texas proceeds over the next four years. A Toyota spokeswoman declined to provide further details on the timeline.

The investment is part of a broader plan to spend up to $10 billion more in the U.S. through 2030, complementing earlier projects such as a $531 million rear-axle plant on the San Antonio campus. Toyota Motor North America CEO Ted Ogawa said the expansion “deepens our commitment to American manufacturing” and reflects confidence in the region’s workforce and long-term growth potential.

Toyota, which employs about 48,000 people in the United States, has invested $8.3 billion in the San Antonio plant since its 2003 groundbreaking. Analysts note that the added capacity could help the automaker narrow its sales gap with General Motors, as hybrid models gain market share.
