Double Fine and Compulsion Games regain independence and retain their IP after Xbox partnership ends

Summary

Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games will become independent studios again, keeping the rights to their existing titles as they transition out of Xbox ownership.

Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games announced that they will return to independent management after years under Xbox. Both studios said they will retain ownership of their existing intellectual property, including Compulsion's titles Contrast, We Happy Few and South of Midnight, and Double Fine's catalog.

The studios expressed gratitude for the support received from Xbox and indicated that the transition will focus on supporting their teams. They emphasized a continued commitment to creating distinctive, story-driven games.

"We’re thankful to everyone at Xbox for seven great years together, and for working with us to reach an outcome which preserves our history and culture, and returns ownership of our games to us," said Tim Schafer and the Double Fine team.

"We are confident in the future of Compulsion Games and look forward to this next chapter where one thing will remain constant: we will create unique games that tell important stories," said Compulsion Games.

Both studios said further updates on upcoming projects will be shared in the near future.
