Roof Collapse at BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township Prompting Emergency Response
A roof section of a BJ's Wholesale Club on Route 35 collapsed around 11:30 a.m., but no injuries were reported and all staff and customers were accounted for.
Emergency crews responded to a roof collapse at a BJ's Wholesale Club located on Route 35 in the Oakhurst area of Ocean Township on Monday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., prompting the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office and local police to secure the scene and advise the public to stay clear.
Police confirmed that all 27 employees present in the building and the customers inside at the time were safe and accounted for, and no injuries were reported. Ocean Township Police Chief Michael Sorrentino and Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said roughly one-fifth of the rear portion of the store gave way, likely due to the weight of water from recent heavy rain.
Multiple mutual-aid teams from neighboring towns were dispatched to assist, and authorities urged drivers to avoid Route 35 because of ongoing flooding in the vicinity. The investigation into the cause of the collapse continues.
