Gun Violence Claims at Least 43 Lives Over Fourth of July Weekend

Summary

More than 40 people were killed and dozens injured in a series of shootings across the United States during the Independence Day weekend, including an incident involving soccer fans in Los Angeles.

More than 40 people were killed and numerous others wounded in a wave of shootings across the United States over the Fourth of July weekend, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The database recorded 43 deaths from early Saturday through Sunday, adding to a year-to-date total of 6,604 firearm fatalities.

In Los Angeles, police said a suspect opened fire during an argument among Mexico soccer supporters after the team’s World Cup loss, wounding four people, including a woman and a child who sought help. All victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Separate incidents included two fatalities in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, where three people were shot in a crowded area, and the killing of a man and a woman in their late teens or early twenties in a nightclub parking lot in Austin, Texas. Authorities have not linked the Austin shooting to the venue itself.

Additional shootings were reported in Compton, California, where three people died at separate Independence Day block parties, and in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, where a mass shooting left two men dead and at least nine injured.

The spate of violence comes amid ongoing debate over federal gun-control measures, which have stalled in Congress despite repeated calls for stricter regulations.
