YouTube channel creates playable Mario Kart-style interactive video using 360° format
Atlas Arcade released a short interactive video that lets viewers control a racer on a 360° YouTube video, demonstrating a novel use of the platform’s subtitle and scripting features.
A YouTube channel called Atlas Arcade has released an interactive video that lets viewers steer a racer across a short segment of a virtual Rainbow Road track. The experience, which lasts under a minute, uses YouTube’s 360-degree video capability and custom subtitle tracks to allow users to switch between different characters by selecting subtitle options.
The channel, which has about 37,500 subscribers, has previously produced similar interactive adaptations of games such as Flappy Bird and Five Nights at Freddy’s. According to the video’s description, the underlying code was written in HTML and JavaScript, with assets and animations generated in Python using the Manim library.
Animated Subtitles, a separate channel that adapts sprites and animations for YouTube’s subtitle system, supplied the custom subtitle tracks that enable character selection. While the format is not a full game, the creators suggest it could inspire more complex interactive experiences on the platform.
"The code for this game was written in HTML and JavaScript with additional assets and animations rendered using Python with the help of the Manim library," the video description states.
Industry observers note that such videos illustrate the potential for narrative-driven interactive content on YouTube, though they do not indicate an imminent shift to full-scale gaming on the service.
