Valve releases SteamOS 3.8.14 to boost Wi-Fi download speeds, beta available for Steam Deck

Summary

Valve's latest SteamOS update addresses a Wi-Fi speed limitation caused by misreported router capabilities, with a beta version already offered to Steam Deck users.

Valve has issued SteamOS version 3.8.14, aimed at improving Wi-Fi download performance on devices that use a wireless antenna. The update resolves an issue where routers that incorrectly advertise their Modulation Coding Scheme (MCS) requirements cause connected devices to default to lower speeds. By correcting the MCS handling, the operating system can utilize the full bandwidth supported by the router.

The patch is available for any non-Valve hardware running SteamOS, and a beta build (3.8.22) has been released for Steam Deck owners through the device's Beta and Preview channels. Valve has not provided a specific timeline for the public release of the Steam Deck update, but indicated it should arrive within a few days. It remains uncertain whether the same update will be rolled out to Steam Machines.

"The new version fixes an issue that caused Wi-Fi speeds to be limited on routers that incorrectly advertise their MCS requirements," a Valve spokesperson said.

Users are advised that the beta version is provided "at your own risk" until the final public release is made available.
