Multiple shootings and a fireworks blast kill at least six people during Fourth of July celebrations across the United States

Summary

Violent incidents, including shootings in New York, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and California, as well as a fireworks explosion in California, left at least six dead and dozens injured during Independence Day events.

Violent incidents across the United States on July 4 resulted in at least six deaths and dozens of injuries. In Brooklyn, New York, a man wearing a black ski mask opened fire on a family barbecue, wounding eight people, including four children; a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition.

In Pensacola, Florida, a 19-year-old was killed and six others were wounded after a targeted shooting, police said. "The youngest victim in this case was 16. The age range was 16 to 26 of the seven victims — very young, innocent kids out there," said Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom.

A shooting in Fort Wayne, Indiana, left one woman dead and eight adults with non-life-threatening injuries. In Gary, Indiana, two separate shootings early Sunday resulted in a 10-year-old boy’s death and injuries to several others.

In Compton, California, a party at an apartment complex turned deadly when a woman and a man were killed and three others injured; one of the injured remains in critical condition.

Four people were wounded in a shooting in Dayton’s Oregon District, Ohio, after bars had closed and security had ended their shifts.

In Canton, Ohio, a 46-year-old woman was shot in the back while sleeping after celebratory gunfire; the suspect, Darius J. Leishman, was arrested. > "The idea that firing weapons randomly into the air has no consequences, or knowing and ignoring those consequences is outrageous," Canton Police Chief John Gabbard said.

A 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting in St. Louis, Missouri, and two other teens were hospitalized.

A fireworks explosion in Chino, California, caused one death and critical injuries to two others; Derion Tradon James Jr. was detained on an involuntary manslaughter charge.
