Delta flight encounters firework during July 4 landing in Chicago
A Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 reported contact with a firework while descending into Chicago Midway Airport on July 4, but landed safely.
Delta Flight 1076, an Airbus A319 traveling from Atlanta to Chicago Midway International Airport, reported that a firework struck the aircraft during its approach on July 4. Air traffic control audio captured a crew member describing hearing and feeling a "big bang" as the aircraft made contact with the device.
"We’re just hoping it was just the mortar that went off underneath, but definitely felt the big bang," the crew member told air traffic control.
The airline said the aircraft completed its landing and taxied to the gate without further incident. Delta indicated that the incident is still under investigation. Chicago police have not yet commented on the matter.
