Teen gunman confronts NYPD vehicle on Brooklyn street, detective wounded
An 18-year-old suspect fired at an NYPD vehicle on Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights, injuring Detective Robert Karroll, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest.
Surveillance video shows an 18-year-old male walking back and forth on Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights shortly after 4:45 a.m. Sunday, brandishing a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The suspect is seen loading the weapon and then approaching an unmarked police cruiser that was part of a sex-offender monitoring unit. Officers responded as the gunman opened fire, resulting in a brief exchange of gunfire. NYPD Detective Robert Karroll was hit in the back; his bullet-proof vest is believed to have prevented a fatal injury. A second officer, who sustained minor injuries, later subdued the suspect, who is now being questioned by detectives. Karroll, who is nearing retirement, is expected to recover fully.
