Man dies by suicide after police encounter following Hampton shooting
A 21-year-old suspect shot himself during a police confrontation after a shooting left two victims injured in Hampton, New Hampshire; the death is being investigated as a suicide.
Police and state troopers responded to a report of gunfire at 29 Ocean Blvd. in Hampton shortly before 1:20 a.m. on Sunday. First responders found a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman with gunshot wounds, both of whom were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Officers later located a suspect matching the description of the shooter. When they made contact, the suspect produced a firearm and shot himself in the head, while an officer discharged a single round at the same time. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Tyshawn Cooper of Taylors, South Carolina, died at the scene. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled suicide.
The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office will conduct a deadly-force investigation, noting that Cooper's death was not caused by the officer’s shot. No officers were injured, and the investigation remains ongoing.
