NYPD officer wounded in early-morning Brooklyn shooting, 18-year-old suspect detained
An NYPD officer was injured after being shot in the vest during a confrontation with an armed suspect in Brooklyn; the 18-year-old male suspect was arrested after a foot chase.
An NYPD officer was shot at about 4:14 a.m. near the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and St. Johns Place in Brooklyn. The bullet struck the officer's bullet-proof vest, causing a non-life-threatening contusion, and he was taken to Kings County Hospital. A second officer also sustained injuries to the face and shoulder.
Police said the incident began when a man, captured on video five minutes earlier with a firearm, approached an unmarked police vehicle. Officers exited the vehicle and attempted to engage the individual, during which the vehicle sustained ballistic damage, including bullet holes in the windshields and passenger side.
The suspect, identified as an 18-year-old male, fled on foot and was pursued to the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Union Street. He was tasered after resisting arrest, and a firearm was recovered. The suspect is now in custody and faces pending charges.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch briefed the media, noting that body cameras were not activated during the initial moments of the encounter because the situation unfolded quickly. Tisch added that the incident underscores the unpredictable risks officers face on duty.
