One dead, six injured in Pensacola shooting after large Fourth of July gathering
Police say a 19-year-old was killed and six others wounded after a shooting during a crowded downtown Pensacola event that authorities described as a teen takeover.
Police said a 19-year-old man died and six other people were injured after shots were fired shortly after 1 a.m. in downtown Pensacola, Florida, where hundreds of teenagers had gathered for Fourth of July celebrations. The incident followed a night of chaotic activity that police described as a “teen takeover,” with middle-schoolers handling fireworks and older teens and young adults filling the streets.
Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom told reporters that the victim’s mother “deserves justice, and she deserves answers, and we’re going to do everything we can to get those for her.” He said the six other victims, ages 16 to 26, are receiving treatment and are expected to survive.
Authorities are asking the public for information to identify one or more gunmen they believe were responsible for the targeted shooting. No suspects had been identified at the time of the news conference.
The police department had added about 50 officers to the area for the holiday, but the chief said the presence did not prevent the violence. He noted that teens were fighting, launching fireworks at others and carrying handguns, and that multiple arrests unrelated to the shooting were made.
Winstrom said the city’s experience reflects a broader national trend of large, unsupervised youth gatherings that sometimes turn violent, citing similar incidents in other major cities. He urged families to stay involved in their children’s activities and to keep them away from potentially dangerous situations.
