Houthis intensify fighting in Hodeidah, Yemeni forces report heavy casualties
Yemeni government officials said the Houthis launched a major ground offensive in the Hodeidah governorate, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries on both sides, while security forces announced the dismantling of a Houthi-linked assassination cell in Aden.
Yemeni government sources reported that Houthi forces mounted a large-scale attack on positions in the Hodeidah governorate, targeting the Dabbas Mountains and areas south of Al-Jarahi. The offensive, described as the most intense in recent weeks, involved mortar and sniper fire as the militants attempted to seize strategic high ground overlooking the city of Hays on the Red Sea coast.
According to a military official, the clashes left dozens of combatants from the National Resistance and Houthi militias killed or wounded. The National Resistance, which opposes the Houthis, said it lost 14 soldiers in the fighting.
In a separate security operation, Yemeni authorities in Aden announced the capture and dismantling of a Houthi-linked cell that had been involved in assassination attempts, including the killing of a journalist and a plot against a senior army commander. The operation was carried out by intelligence agencies in cooperation with the State Security Service.
Local anti-Houthi groups have criticized the United Nations-brokered ceasefire, arguing that it limits their ability to respond to Houthi attacks.
