Former teacher of Taylor Swift dies of cancer on day of her wedding to Travis Kelce

Résumé

Kirk Schwabe, who taught Swift criminal justice and later served as her security guard, died at 69 from metastatic kidney cancer on the same day she married Travis Kelke in New York City.

Kirk Schwabe, a former criminal justice teacher at Hendersonville High School in Nashville and later a security guard for pop star Taylor Swift, died on Friday at age 69 after a battle with metastatic kidney cancer, his family said. Schwabe, who had taught Swift from 2004 to 2006, was moved to hospice care earlier in the week as his health declined rapidly, according to his daughter Sarah Gordon.

In a recent interview, Schwabe expressed confidence in Swift’s choice of partner, saying, "I do trust Taylor’s judgment. She knows what’s best." He also recalled telling her that her career was taking off and that she was becoming a "superstar" with limitless potential.

While working as Swift’s security guard, Schwabe said he monitored her safety with concern, noting that he was responsible for additional guards during large events. His wife, Jane, said he treated Swift like a daughter. Schwabe later left the security role due to burnout but remained supportive of her success.

Swift’s wedding to NFL player Travis Kelce took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, officiated by actor Adam Sandler. The ceremony featured performances by Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks, and guests reported a celebratory atmosphere.

Schwabe’s family said he would have been proud of Swift’s achievements and happy for the couple, even though he did not live to see the wedding.
