Macy's Fourth of July fireworks to launch at 9:02 p.m. across East and Hudson Rivers

Summary

The free Macy's fireworks display, marking its 50th anniversary and the nation’s 250th birthday, will begin at 9:02 p.m. on Saturday with more than 85,000 shells, and limited ticketed viewing areas are available in Brooklyn Bridge Park and the South Street Seaport.

New York City will host the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks on Saturday, marking the 50th anniversary of the show and the United States' 250th birthday. The display is scheduled to start at 9:02 p.m., according to the NYC Emergency Management Department, and will run for about half an hour. More than 85,000 fireworks in 30 colors will be launched from four barges in the East River and two barges on the Hudson River.

The event is free, but only ticket holders can access designated prime-viewing spots at Brooklyn Bridge Park (Piers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6) and the South Street Seaport’s Seaport Square. The city is offering 100,000 lottery tickets for these locations. Non-ticketed spectators may watch from three entry points along the East River—Montgomery Street and Madison Street, the Brooklyn Bridge on- and off-ramps at Robert Wagner Place, and Broad Street and Water Street—as well as multiple waterfront sites in Jersey City.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the 90s with heat indices near 100°F, and scattered showers or storms could affect the show. Organizers note that rain does not automatically cancel the fireworks, though lightning or severe weather may cause a delay.

Public transit will be increased for the event; subway service will run extra trains before and after the show, while bus routes near the viewing areas will be rerouted with additional service after the fireworks. Parking is not available near the access points.

Certain items are prohibited in the viewing zones, including alcohol, illegal drugs, coolers, chairs, umbrellas, large bags, e-cigarettes, drones, balloons, kites, fireworks, spray paint and weapons. NYPD officers may conduct searches.

Officials advise attendees to stay hydrated, suggesting up to three liters of water per person, and to wear loose, light-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Refillable water stations may be present at some entry points, and arriving early can help secure a shaded spot.
