Independence Day events in Washington adjusted amid soaring temperatures
Heat forecasts above 100°F have led to the cancellation of several parades and a delayed opening of the National Mall viewing area, while fireworks and aerial displays remain scheduled.
Temperatures in the Washington area are expected to exceed 100 degrees on Saturday, prompting organizers to modify Independence Day activities. The main parade on the National Mall was called off, along with similar events in Fairfax, Leesburg, Takoma Park and Laurel, due to concerns over heat exposure.
The Salute to America celebration will open the Washington Monument viewing zone at 5 p.m. to limit prolonged time outdoors. More than 30 aerial flyovers and demonstrations are still planned as part of the Freedom 250 program marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Officials advise residents and visitors to stay hydrated, seek shade and monitor weather updates through local apps and alerts.
