Universal's "Minions & Monsters" projected to earn $64.5 million over July 4 weekend

Summary

The animated sequel is expected to open with $39.5 million in its first three days and $64.5 million across the five-day holiday period, trailing earlier franchise entries.

Universal Pictures' latest "Minions & Monsters" is on track for a $64.5 million gross during the five-day Fourth of July weekend, with an estimated $39.5 million in its opening three days, according to industry trackers. The figure would secure the top spot at the box office but remains well below the $120 million five-day debut of "Despicable Me 4" two years ago and the $122 million opening of "Minions: The Rise of Gru" in 2022.

In its third weekend, "Toy Story 3" holds second place with roughly $32 million, a 55 percent decline from its prior week, and is projected to finish the weekend with a domestic total near $367 million after already surpassing $600 million worldwide. Angel Studios' and Wonder Project's historical drama "Young Washington" occupies the third spot with about $16.5 million and received an "A" CinemaScore.

"Minions & Monsters" is the seventh installment in the Despicable Me franchise, which remains the highest-grossing animated series globally. Co-creator Pierre Coffin directed and co-wrote the film with Brian Lynch. The movie has earned an "A-" CinemaScore and holds a 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Hollywood Reporter critic Frank Schreck noted that while the film feels "overstuffed," it delivers sophisticated satirical humor and numerous visual gags that may reward repeat viewings.
