Marianne Lake leaves JPMorgan with $50 million in unvested stock after succession decision

JPMorgan Chase executive Marianne Lake resigned after CEO Jamie Dimon chose other candidates for succession, forfeiting roughly $50 million in unvested shares, according to the Financial Times.

Marianne Lake, a 56-year-old senior executive at JPMorgan Chase, announced her departure on June 25 after learning that CEO Jamie Dimon would promote two other senior bankers instead of naming her as his successor. Sources told the Financial Times that Lake left the firm with about $50 million in unvested stock, which employees typically forfeit when they exit before the vesting period ends. JPMorgan said it was unclear whether an exception would be made for her case.

According to the report, Lake had been informed of Dimon’s decision three days before the bank publicly announced the promotions of co-CEOs Doug Petno and Troy Rohrbaugh to co-president roles. While the bank maintains that Dimon and Lake “had an excellent relationship,” some colleagues questioned her suitability for the top job, describing her as bright but sometimes heavy-handed and noting a preference for managing through layers of subordinates. Other employees who worked directly with her described her as demanding yet accessible, highlighting her frequent visits to branches and participation in Dimon’s annual summer bus tours.

Lake, who joined JPMorgan in 1999 and rose through finance, control, and consumer-banking roles before becoming chief executive of the bank’s consumer and community banking division, had been widely viewed as a leading candidate to succeed Dimon. The succession process remains open, with the bank stating no front-runner has been designated, though internal speculation suggests Rohrbaugh may be a favorite.

Dimon, 70, is expected to remain CEO for roughly three more years before transitioning to the role of executive chairman, a timeline confirmed by sources close to the bank. JPMorgan declined to comment further on the matter.
