Three Killed When Boat Capsizes on Wisconsin's Geneva Lake Amid Storm
A severe thunderstorm caused a boat to overturn on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin, killing three people and rescuing seven others.
Three people died on Friday after their boat capsized on Geneva Lake in southeastern Wisconsin, officials said. The Walworth County undersheriff, Tom Hausner, told a news conference that seven additional passengers were pulled from the water, though their medical condition was not immediately known. The incident is under investigation, and authorities have not released the victims' identities or the exact cause of the capsizing.
According to Hausner, the storm struck the lake around 12:10 p.m., prompting 911 calls that alerted emergency responders. A squall line of thunderstorms moved across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin that morning, producing wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour, along with hail and downed trees. Meteorologist John Gagan of the Weather Service in Dousman, Wis., said the storm passed over the lake by 12:40 p.m.
The severe weather also caused widespread power outages, affecting nearly 300,000 homes and businesses across Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin, according to PowerOutage.com. Geneva Lake, located about 43 miles southwest of Milwaukee, is a popular recreation spot near the resort town of Lake Geneva.
