Man Treated for Injuries After Suspected Shark Bite at Jones Beach

Summary

A man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds after a possible shark bite at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island, prompting an hour-long beach closure while officials searched the water.

A man was injured in a suspected shark bite at Jones Beach State Park's Field 6 on Long Island on July 3, around noon, local time. Witnesses said he emerged from the water bleeding from his foot and collapsed on the shore. Lifeguards provided first aid before he was transported to Nassau University Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

State Parks Regional Director George Gorman said officials "bandaged him up and he was transported to Nassau University Medical Center. We immediately brought everybody in from the water." The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation noted the wound was large and consistent with a possible tooth cut.

Lifeguards ordered swimmers out of the ocean and suspended swimming for about an hour while the water was inspected for sharks or other dangerous marine life. After no threats were observed, swimming was resumed with a restriction limiting swimmers to waist-deep water.

The incident occurred amid a series of recent shark sightings in the New York City area, including a shark spotted at Rockaway Beach earlier that morning and another estimated at 8-9 feet near Point Lookout on July 2, each prompting temporary beach closures.
