Several 2023 Android models may merit replacement by 2026
Tech reviewers suggest that owners of the Pixel 7 Pro, Galaxy S22 Ultra, Motorola Razr Plus, Pixel 7a, Galaxy A54 and Moto G Power could benefit from newer models released in 2026, citing improvements in performance, battery life and software support.
Reviewers note that smartphones are remaining usable longer thanks to more robust hardware and extended software updates, but certain 2023 models show clear signs of aging. The Google Pixel 7 Pro, while adequate for everyday tasks, suffered from overheating and limited battery life due to its Tensor G2 processor. The newer Pixel 10 Pro series, equipped with a Tensor G5 chip and a Super Actua display, offers better thermal performance, longer battery endurance and an improved screen for outdoor use.
Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra also experienced frequent overheating with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and modest screen-time. Its successor, the Galaxy S26 Ultra, adds a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor, a redesigned cooling system, a brighter 200-megapixel camera and promises up to seven years of Android updates, addressing both performance and longevity concerns.
Motorola’s 2023 Razr Plus, praised for its design and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, still lags in battery capacity. The 2026 Razr Plus and the newer Razr Ultra feature larger cover screens, more durable hinges and extended software support, making them attractive upgrades for users who value the foldable form factor.
The Pixel 7a struggled with Tensor G2-related overheating, poor battery life and modem issues that affected 5G connectivity. Its replacement, the Pixel 10a, introduces a Tensor G4 processor, a 120 Hz Actua display, a more reliable modem and a seven-year update commitment, delivering noticeable gains in efficiency and daily use.
Samsung’s Galaxy A54 improved on its predecessor with an Exynos 1380 chip and a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED panel. The upcoming Galaxy A57 builds on that foundation with Gorilla Glass Victus+, an aluminum frame, a larger 6.7-inch display, an Exynos 1680 processor and continued software support, though it removes the microSD slot.
Motorola’s Moto G Power (2024) remains a budget-friendly option with a Dimensity 7020 chipset, 8 GB RAM and a 5,000 mAh battery. The 2026 iteration upgrades to a Dimensity 6300 chip but retains similar specifications, offering limited incentive for users to replace a still-functional 2024 model unless they seek higher performance or a premium display.
Overall, the reviewers suggest that while many 2023 devices remain serviceable, the performance, battery and software improvements in the 2026 releases provide compelling reasons for upgrades, especially for users who prioritize longevity and the latest features.
