Meta CEO says AI agent development slower than expected

Summary

Mark Zuckerberg told employees that progress on Meta's AI agents has lagged behind internal expectations, and that the company expects improvements within the next few months.

Meta's chief executive Mark Zuckerberg told staff at an internal town-hall meeting on Thursday that the development of the company's AI agents has not accelerated as senior leaders had hoped. He said the anticipated benefits of the recent restructuring around AI have not yet materialised, but he expects the firm to see measurable gains from its AI investments within three to six months.

Zuckerberg also referenced the company's earlier workforce reductions, noting that the layoffs of about 8,000 employees and the reassignment of roughly 7,000 staff to AI groups, including the Agent Transformation team, were driven by concerns that Meta needed to move faster to keep pace with industry changes. He acknowledged that the cuts were not as smooth as intended.

Meta has committed significant resources to artificial-intelligence infrastructure, with estimates that spending could reach $145 billion this year. The company did not respond to a request for comment.
