Michigan reports over 225 cyclosporiasis cases across 21 counties

Résumé

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services confirmed more than 225 infections of the parasite Cyclospora in 21 counties and Detroit, with numbers expected to rise as investigations continue.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said a "large and growing" outbreak of cyclosporiasis has been identified in 21 counties and the city of Detroit, with more than 225 cases reported between June 22 and July 1. The tally, provided by spokesperson Lynn Sutfin, includes 92 cases in Monroe County, 36 in Lenawee, 28 in Washtenaw and smaller numbers in other jurisdictions.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, typically contracted from contaminated fresh produce imported from tropical regions. The illness is not known to spread person-to-person. Symptoms can appear two to 14 days after exposure and may include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, low-grade fever and weight loss.

State officials have launched a joint investigation with the Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine the source. A health alert issued on June 30 urges physicians to test stool samples from patients with compatible symptoms and to report positive results within 24 hours.

"Individuals concerned about sudden gastrointestinal illness should contact a health care provider," Sutfin said. "Individuals experiencing diarrheal illness or vomiting are encouraged to hydrate, particularly during the high temperatures expected this week."

Ohio health authorities are conducting a parallel inquiry into 65 cases in Lucas County, though the CDC has found no evidence linking the Michigan and Ohio clusters. The agency noted that nationwide surveillance shows 145 cases through June 16, predating the recent Michigan reports.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture emphasized food-safety practices, advising residents to wash hands and produce thoroughly, scrub firm fruits and vegetables, and refrigerate cut items promptly. Officials continue to monitor the situation and will update the public as more information becomes available.
