U.S. defeats Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 to reach World Cup round of 16
The United States beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 32, advancing to a Monday match against Belgium in Seattle.
Malik Tillman scored a free-kick in the 82nd minute to give the United States a 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32. The win moves the hosts into the round of 16, where they will face Belgium in Seattle on Monday.
Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the 45th minute, but was shown a red card in the 64th after a foul on Tarik Muharemovic. Despite playing with ten men for more than 30 minutes, the United States held the lead. Christian Pulisic had a goal ruled out for off-side in the 78th minute.
After the match, Tillman said he had practiced the set piece and was pleased to convert it. Captain Tim Ream described the team’s composure while short-handed, and coach Mauricio Pochettino noted the significance of the victory, becoming the first U.S. coach with three World Cup wins.
Balogun, who leads the U.S. with three tournament goals, will miss the next game due to the suspension. Midfielder Weston McKennie questioned the consistency of refereeing decisions during the tournament. The result ended a ten-game losing streak for the United States against European opponents in World Cup play.
