U.S. defeats Bosnia 2-0 to reach World Cup round of 16, Balogun suspended

The United States secured a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32, earning a place in the round of 16 where they will meet Belgium. Forward Folarin Balogun opened the scoring but was later shown a red card and will be unavailable for the upcoming match.

Midfielder Malik Tillman added a second goal in the 82nd minute with a free-kick that curled over the wall and into the net, sealing the win in front of a crowd of 68,827 at Levi's Stadium.

The U.S. entered the match as group-stage winners and were favored against the third-place finisher from Group B. Coach Mauricio Pochettino kept the same starting lineup that had been used in the group opener, with Matt Freese in goal, a back line of Alex Freeman, Chris Richards, Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson, and a midfield anchored by Tyler Adams, Tillman, Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic.

Bosnia and Herzegovina struggled to create clear chances against the United States' pressing style, while the Americans generated several scoring opportunities. Balogun's first-half goal came after a quick combination between McKennie and Tillman, but his celebration was cut short when he was dismissed for a serious foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic.

The red card left the United States a man down for more than 20 minutes, prompting a tactical shift toward a more defensive posture. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team held on and later extended the lead through Tillman's set-piece.

The win marks only the second knockout-stage victory in the U.S. team's World Cup history and the first since a 2002 round-of-16 win over Mexico. The United States will travel to Seattle for the round-of-16 match against Belgium on Monday.
