Emergency medical services responded to an unconscious individual at the Kentucky home of Republican Senator Mitch McConnell on the morning of June 14, according to a publicly released dispatch recording. The call, made before 9 a.m., noted a "cardiac arrest" and that "CPR is in progress" at the address, though the senator's name was not mentioned and the identity of the patient was not confirmed.
The recording was first posted by journalist Desiree Townsend and reviewed by CBS News. On the same day, a spokesperson for McConnell issued a statement saying the senator was hospitalized and "receiving excellent care," without providing details about the reason for admission or the facility.
The following day, the spokesperson added that McConnell, the Senate's former top Republican, "is fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters." Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he had spoken with McConnell and that the senator "sounded good" and was "clearly dialed into what's going on," noting his involvement in the week's legislative agenda. McConnell last cast a vote on June 11.
