Four Adults Charged After 16 Children Found in Rural Ohio Home

Summary

Four family members were arrested and charged with multiple felony child endangerment counts after 16 children were discovered in severely unsanitary conditions in a Hamden, Ohio residence.

Sixteen children ranging from 1.5 to 18 years old were found living in a severely unsanitary environment in a home in Hamden, Ohio, prompting the Ohio Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement to arrest the children's grandparents and parents. The adults—Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders and Elizabeth Siders—appeared via video link in court on Wednesday, where a judge set a $300,000 cash bond for each and they entered not-guilty pleas. Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer charged them with 17 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment, each carrying a potential sentence of two to twelve years in prison. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

Officials said the children were kept in a 12-by-12-foot area for an extended period, with several suffering serious injuries that required hospitalization, including two who were air-lifted to trauma centers. All children received medical examinations; seven were taken to hospitals in Columbus, and one remained in intensive care on a ventilator.

The state is seeking temporary custody of the children, and the Attorney General's office has offered investigative support. Sheriff Ryan Cain described the living conditions as extremely unsanitary, noting the presence of bacterial contamination and human waste. No evidence of a broader public threat has been found, and authorities have not commented on possible sexual abuse pending further investigation.

The family has connections to several Ohio counties and Wisconsin, and the property where the children were found is held in trust for a deceased individual. Law enforcement continues to gather evidence, and the public is encouraged to provide information to the Ohio Attorney General’s tip line.
