Harry Kane overtakes Pelé with World Cup goal record
England captain Harry Kane scored two late goals against the Democratic Republic of Congo to reach 13 World Cup goals, surpassing Pelé's tally.
England secured a 2-1 comeback win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the World Cup round of 16 after Harry Kane netted a brace in the final minutes. Congo had taken an early lead in the seventh minute, but Kane equalised in the 75th minute, matching Pelé's 12-goal World Cup record, and then scored the winner shortly after, giving him 13 tournament goals.
The victory kept England in the competition, with the match featuring missed chances from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford and a notable goal-line clearance by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Kane's performance also moved him within one goal of the tournament’s top scorer, Lionel Messi, and added to his record as England’s all-time World Cup scorer, a title he previously claimed by surpassing Gary Lineker.
"Kane's goals have given England the chance to continue in the tournament," said a spokesperson for the English Football Association.
Kane now has five goals in the current World Cup and 84 goals in 117 appearances for England, having previously won the Golden Boot in 2018.
