Brother of NFL defensive lineman Calais Campbell charged with murder in Georgia

Ciarre Campbell, 41, was booked in Fulton County, Georgia, on murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or knife charges after the body of his mother, Nateal Campbell, was discovered at her Buckhead home on Tuesday. Police were called for a welfare check by a family member, and Lt. Christopher Butler said the location had been the subject of previous calls and noted possible mental-health issues involving an individual.

The Campbell family issued a statement expressing devastation over the loss of the matriarch and requested privacy while investigations continue.

"We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family."

Ciarre's defense attorney, Jay Abt, told reporters that he intends to contest the charges and asked the public to respect the family's privacy.

"We vigorously protest his innocence. We look forward to his day in court. I'm honored to defend him and, most importantly, the Campbell family, I'm asking on their behalf that the public respect their privacy at this time."

Calais Campbell, a six-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman who recently signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, has not commented publicly on the case. He is known for community work through the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, which he founded with his mother and siblings.
