Former X-Men ’97 Writer Beau DeMayo Discusses Dismissal and Aftermath

Beau DeMayo, the writer who was removed from the animated series X-Men ’97 in early 2024, told a new interview that he believes his dismissal was linked to prejudice against him as a gay Black man. He said that after working on a cancelled Blade film and returning to the series, he began to notice “racist, sexist, homophobic vibes” that became more overt. DeMayo recounted receiving a call from Disney’s human-resources department informing him that a coworker had accused him of misconduct, a claim he said he learned of only at that moment. He described the experience as “very traumatic,” noting that he had expected a safe work environment.

Vanity Fair reported that DeMayo stopped responding to their inquiries in early 2025, but observed that his presence on the subscription platform OnlyFans became increasingly explicit. DeMayo posted a public rebuttal to Disney and Marvel on his OnlyFans page, which he referred to as “BeaunlyFans.” He clarified that the account was approved by Marvel, which told him that as long as he did not promote the show on the platform and kept it separate from his professional duties, it was outside the company’s jurisdiction.
