Carroll Seeks Court Order for Trump to Pay $5 Million Judgment

Summary

E. Jean Carroll asked a Manhattan federal judge to enforce a jury verdict requiring former President Donald Trump to pay nearly $5.8 million in damages, after the Supreme Court declined to review the case.

A New York federal court received a filing on Tuesday from journalist E. Jean Carroll requesting that former President Donald Trump be ordered to pay the $5 million awarded to her in a civil jury verdict. The verdict, issued in 2023, found Trump liable for sexual abuse that Carroll said occurred in the mid-1990s and for defamation after she publicly described the incident in 2019.

Carroll’s attorneys argued that the amount owed, which has risen to about $5.8 million with interest, should be disbursed without further delay, noting that Trump has repeatedly sought to postpone payment through legal challenges.

"To date, Carroll has agreed to each of defendant’s many requests to delay the payment he owes her. Given the extraordinary lengths he has taken to avoid such payments and that each of those efforts has been denied in full, that cooperation ends today. It is time for him to pay Carroll," the lawyers wrote.

The filing follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to hear Trump’s appeal of the civil case, a move that left the lower-court judgment intact. Trump’s legal team has not commented on the new request.

Separately, Trump is also contesting an $83 million defamation award granted by another Manhattan jury after a January 2024 trial in which he briefly testified.
