The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working to identify the source of a Cyclospora outbreak that has been confirmed in 17 states. Health officials have documented at least 145 cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic food-borne illness, and 20 people have been hospitalized with severe symptoms.
Public-health teams are focusing on clusters reported in New York, Illinois and Texas. Cyclospora infection typically results from consuming contaminated food or water and can cause intense abdominal cramps, nausea, fatigue, vomiting and frequent watery diarrhea. The illness is not usually life-threatening, but symptoms may persist for days to weeks and can recur if untreated. Antibiotic therapy can shorten the duration of illness.
"Cyclosporiasis is a type of food poisoning caused by a parasite," the CDC explained.
The investigation continues as officials seek to pinpoint the contaminated source and prevent further spread.
