Carroll Seeks Court Order for $5.8 Million Payment After Supreme Court Declines to Hear Appeal
E. Jean Carroll asked a Manhattan federal judge to enforce a nearly $5.8 million judgment against former President Donald Trump after the Supreme Court refused to review the civil verdict.
Advice columnist E. Jean Carroll filed a motion in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday requesting that former President Donald Trump be ordered to pay the full amount of a jury verdict that found he sexually abused her in the mid-1990s and later defamed her. The judgment, originally $5 million, has accrued interest and now totals about $5.8 million, according to Carroll’s attorneys.
Carroll’s lawyers argued that Trump’s attempts to delay payment should be rejected, noting that the Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear an appeal of the 2023 civil jury decision. They said Trump’s legal team had contacted them shortly after the high court’s action, seeking a further postponement while a petition for reconsideration was prepared.
“To date, Carroll has agreed to each of Defendant’s many requests to delay the payment he owes her. Given the extraordinary lengths he has taken to avoid such payments and that each of those efforts has been denied in full, that cooperation ends today. It is time for him to pay Carroll,” the filing stated.
Trump has not commented on the filing. He continues to contest the judgment and is also appealing an $83 million defamation award granted by a separate Manhattan jury after a January 2024 trial in which he briefly testified. The judge in that case limited the jury’s role to determining the amount owed based on the earlier findings.
