Study Shows Scratching Worsens Itch-Related Skin Inflammation

Research on mice indicates that scratching amplifies swelling and immune response in allergic skin reactions, confirming medical advice to avoid scratching.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have demonstrated that scratching can intensify skin inflammation caused by mild irritants. In experiments, mice exposed to a rash-inducing substance on their ears developed greater swelling and attracted more inflammatory immune cells when they were allowed to scratch. Mice with a genetic defect that reduced itch-sensing nerve activity showed a milder reaction, and those prevented from scratching with protective collars also exhibited less swelling and fewer immune cells at the site. > "The evidence matches people’s everyday experiences that scratching really can make things worse," said Dr. Daniel Kaplan, a dermatologist who leads the study. The findings suggest that even a brief, seemingly soothing scratch may trigger a cycle that worsens the underlying irritation.
