LeBron James Announces Departure from Lakers, Will Enter Free Agency

LeBron James informed the Los Angeles Lakers that his eight-year tenure with the club is ending, and he will enter free agency to pursue a record-extending 24th season with a team he believes can contend for a title in 2027. James said his motivation remains winning championships, and he expects to discuss options once the league’s free-agent period opens at 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, though he cannot sign a contract until the offseason moratorium lifts on July 6.

The Lakers released a statement thanking James for his contributions, including the 2020 NBA championship and numerous franchise records. > "LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history," said Jeanie Buss of the Lakers ownership group. "We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances, and the countless records he broke in purple and gold. James’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, confirmed the plan to the media. Potential destinations include the Golden State Warriors, a team with which James has a history of Finals matchups and personal connections to players and coach Steve Kerr. Warriors forward Draymond Green recently declined his player option, giving the franchise flexibility for roster moves. > "Personally, I’m always willing to work with the team on whatever is best, especially at this point in my career," Green said on his podcast.

At 42, James is the NBA’s oldest active player and the first to log 23 seasons, a milestone he will extend this year. He remains the league’s all-time points leader and has amassed 22 All-Star selections, four MVP awards and four Finals MVP honors. His next decision will be a major factor in the upcoming offseason player-movement landscape.
