AeroVironment Unveils 'Skyfall' Mars Mission Concept to Deploy Six Scout Helicopters

Summary

AeroVironment and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have introduced a new Mars exploration concept, 'Skyfall,' which would deploy six autonomous scout helicopters from an entry capsule to survey potential landing sites for future human missions.

AeroVironment, in collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has announced a new Mars exploration concept called 'Skyfall.' The proposal involves deploying six scout helicopters from an entry capsule as it descends through the Martian atmosphere, aiming to survey candidate landing sites for future crewed missions.

According to AeroVironment, the Skyfall system is designed to reduce mission costs and complexity by eliminating the need for a traditional landing platform. Each helicopter would operate independently, capturing high-resolution surface images and collecting radar data to help identify areas with water, ice, and other resources vital for human exploration.

The Skyfall concept builds on the success of the Ingenuity Mars helicopter, which completed 72 flights in Jezero Crater and achieved the first powered flight on another planet in April 2021. William Pomerantz, AeroVironment's head of space ventures, said, > "With six helicopters, Skyfall offers a low-cost solution that multiplies the range we would cover, the data we would collect, and the scientific research we would conduct – making humanity's first footprints on Mars meaningfully closer."

AeroVironment has begun internal investments and is coordinating with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to target a potential launch of Skyfall in 2028.
