Pistons aim to retain Jalen Duren amid free-agency talks
Detroit expects to match any offer for restricted-free agent Jalen Duren, who is exploring sign-and-trade discussions with other teams.
Detroit Pistons officials say they intend to keep 22-year-old forward Jalen Duren, a restricted free agent, despite his reported meetings with the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers. The league’s free-agency period begins at 6 p.m. ET on June 30.
Duren posted a breakout season with averages of 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and a 65% field-goal rate, helping the Pistons to a 60-win campaign and a second-round playoff appearance. He earned third-team All-NBA honors, qualifying the Pistons to offer a maximum contract of up to five years and $287 million.
"I want him here, that’s where I’m at with JD," said Trajan Langdon, Detroit’s president of basketball operations.
Outside teams can extend offer sheets worth up to $177.4 million over four years, but the Pistons can exceed that total by adding an extra year and higher overall salary, even if the annual average value is lower. The franchise retains the right to match any competing offer, and it is not planning a sign-and-trade that would limit Duren’s contract to four years and $177 million.
If no agreement is reached, Duren could accept a qualifying offer for the 2026-27 season, which would make him an unrestricted free agent the following summer.
