Drone Strikes JetBlue Flight Near JFK, No Injuries Reported

Summary

A JetBlue aircraft hit a drone while descending toward John F. Kennedy International Airport; the plane landed safely and the FAA opened an investigation.

A JetBlue pilot reported that a drone collided with his aircraft as it approached John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 7:15 a.m. on Monday. The flight, a redeye from Las Vegas, was at roughly 3,000 feet altitude when the incident occurred, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). No injuries were reported and JetBlue said an inspection found no damage to the plane, which landed without further incident.

The FAA, which receives more than 100 drone-sighting reports near airports each month, said it will investigate the strike. The agency reiterated that flying drones near airports is illegal and poses safety hazards, advising operators to stay clear of restricted airspace and to avoid manned aircraft.

The incident follows a separate report from a United Airlines crew that observed a drone while descending into Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday evening. That Boeing 737, carrying over 100 passengers and five crew members, also landed safely.

"Flying drones near planes, helicopters and airports is dangerous and illegal," the FAA said in a statement.

Both airlines confirmed that passengers were able to disembark normally after the flights.
