JetBlue pilot reports drone collision during JFK approach

Summary

A JetBlue flight from Las Vegas struck a drone at about 3,000 feet while approaching JFK Airport, but landed safely and no damage was found.

A JetBlue Airways pilot said the aircraft hit a drone while on final approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday morning. The incident occurred at roughly 3,000 feet near the cockpit area, according to the pilot’s transmission to air traffic control.

The plane, which was arriving from Las Vegas, completed its landing without assistance and post-flight inspections revealed no damage or evidence of a collision. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the report and said it will investigate the event.

"Safety is JetBlue's first priority, and we will assist with any relevant investigations," the airline said in a statement.

The FAA noted that it receives more than 100 drone sighting reports near airports each month and that unauthorized drone operations in the vicinity of aircraft are prohibited, potentially resulting in fines, criminal charges, or imprisonment.
