Viktor Hovland Wins Travelers Championship in Sudden-Death Playoff over Scottie Scheffler
Viktor Hovland defeated world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler on the 18th hole in a sudden-death playoff to claim his eighth PGA Tour victory at the Travelers Championship.
Viktor Hovland secured his eighth PGA Tour win by edging world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a sudden-death playoff on the 442-yard par-4 18th hole at the Travelers Championship. Both players hit comparable drives, and their iron shots left them within a few feet of the cup—Hovland six feet away and Scheffler two feet. Hovland’s putt rolled in, while Scheffler missed his attempt.
"I hit it on my line, I think it was just a little bit firm," Scheffler said after the miss. "It was one of those putts you kind of had to make, and I just hit it a little bit firm. So that's a bit disappointing … Just one of those weeks where I was close, but just wasn't quite good enough."
"It's unbelievable, especially after Scottie hits it so close there," Hovland said. "I knew I had to bring in my best to have a chance to beat him and he's certainly brought it out of me and couldn't be happier."
The playoff followed a Sunday round that featured a 90-minute rain delay on the 14th hole. Scheffler held a two-stroke lead during the delay, and both players finished the round at 21 under par after missing birdie opportunities on the 18th.
Scheffler entered the tournament with one win this season, three runner-up finishes and top-25 placements in all 13 events he had played, leading the FedEx Cup standings. Hovland, ranked 30th in the world before the event, had a solo third-place finish at the RBC Canadian Open two weeks earlier and had missed the cut at the two most recent majors.
"I know how good I can get and I keep pushing myself and I keep wanting to get better and then when I fall short it really pisses me off," Hovland said. "I didn't get off to a great start on Thursday and I just kind of didn't let it bother me as much. Obviously it helps when you got people like this cheering you on as well."
The Travelers Championship concluded the PGA Tour’s eight Signature Events for the 2026 season. The Tour will restructure its schedule next year to increase the number of top-level events. The next tournament is the John Deere Classic in Illinois, followed by the Genesis Scottish Open and the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
