Supreme Court Declines to Review Trump Appeal in E. Jean Carroll $5 Million Verdict

Summary

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear former President Donald Trump's appeal of a New York jury's $5 million verdict finding him liable for sexual abuse and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll.

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to take up former President Donald Trump's request to review a New York federal jury's verdict that awarded writer E. Jean Carroll $5 million for sexual abuse and defamation. The Court did not provide a reason for the denial, and none of the justices issued a written dissent, even though three were appointed by Trump.

Trump's legal team argued that the trial judge had improperly permitted testimony from two other women who claimed they were also victims of his alleged misconduct. Carroll first publicly accused Trump of rape in a 2019 New York magazine article, describing an incident that allegedly occurred in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the mid-1990s. She later filed a civil suit alleging both rape and defamation after Trump denied the allegations.

In May 2023, a Manhattan federal judge found Trump liable for both sexual abuse and defamation, resulting in the $5 million award. A separate jury later awarded Carroll $83.3 million in a defamation case, which Trump is currently appealing in a lower federal appeals court.

Requests for comment were sent to Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, the White House, and Trump's Supreme Court counsel, Michael Martinich-Sauter.
