Pretrial Hearing Begins for Alex Murdaugh's Murder Retrial
A pretrial hearing in Lexington County set timelines for evidence exchange and future dates as Alex Murdaugh's murder convictions were overturned and a new trial is scheduled.
Alex Murdaugh appeared at a Lexington County courthouse on Monday for a pretrial hearing that will establish deadlines for evidence sharing and schedule future hearings in the retrial of the murders of his wife and son. The hearing follows a South Carolina Supreme Court decision that overturned his 2023 murder convictions and life sentence.
The defense filed motions seeking to allow Murdaugh to attend hearings in civilian clothing without restraints, to obtain a laptop without internet for reviewing evidence, and to move the trial venue out of Colleton County. They also requested that prosecutors provide DNA material found under his wife’s fingernails for independent testing.
"Mr. Murdaugh’s convictions for non-violent, white-collar crimes in no way justify presenting him to the jury pool as a shackled prisoner in a prison jumpsuit via video cameras at televised pretrial hearings," the attorneys wrote.
Murdaugh, who is serving concurrent federal and state sentences for financial crimes, continues to deny the killings despite his 2023 conviction on two counts of murder. The Supreme Court’s reversal cited concerns that jurors were influenced by evidence of his unrelated financial misconduct and instructions to scrutinize his demeanor during the original trial.
The hearing is expected to be procedural, focusing on logistical matters rather than substantive evidence, as the case proceeds toward a new trial.
