Heat wave expected to hit eastern U.S. during Fourth of July celebrations

Summary

A prolonged heat dome will bring near-100-degree temperatures and high humidity to the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast through the Fourth of July weekend, prompting health warnings from officials.

A broad heat dome is set to move from the Midwest early this week into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by Wednesday, peaking along the I-95 corridor on Friday, just before the Fourth of July holiday. The National Weather Service expects consecutive days with temperatures near or above 100°F and heat indices exceeding 110°F in many locations, with overnight lows remaining unusually warm.

The service warned that the heat could be the most significant in eastern Virginia since July 2012, a period that saw more than 30 heat-related deaths across four states. Forecast offices from the Mid-Atlantic to New England indicated heightened risk of heat-related illness due to the combination of daytime heat and warm nights.

Cities such as Richmond, Virginia, are forecast to top 100°F for three straight days, potentially breaking daily records. Washington, DC, could see highs of 102°F on Thursday and 103°F on Friday, while New York City may tie its daily high record and warm overnight low record on Thursday night.

The National Weather Service placed more than 100 million people in Level 3 or Level 4 heat-risk categories, extending from the Deep South to parts of the Upper Midwest and New England. Officials emphasized that high humidity will limit nighttime cooling, increasing the danger of heat exhaustion, cramps and stroke.

Local authorities are preparing for the holiday influx. Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, DC, announced a briefing on “extreme heat preparedness” for upcoming events. New York Governor Kathy Hochul warned that “heat impacts are cumulative,” urging residents to stay hydrated and check on neighbors. Nashville’s emergency management office said volunteers will conduct “Heat Patrols” to assist vulnerable populations.

While thunderstorms may bring some relief to parts of the Midwest and Northeast later in the weekend as the ridge of high pressure weakens, above-average temperatures are expected to persist across much of the South into the following week.
