Wife and two children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo found dead after Venezuela earthquakes
Rescue teams recovered the bodies of Lucas Trejo's wife and two children from a collapsed apartment in Playa Grande following the twin 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes that struck Venezuela's northern coast.
Rescue crews recovered the bodies of Argentine defender Lucas Trejo's wife, Yanina Maranella, and their two children, Aaron and Ainhoa, after a collapsed apartment building in Playa Grande, La Guaira, was destroyed by twin earthquakes on Wednesday. Trejo, who plays for Venezuelan club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira, was in Caracas with his team when the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes hit the northern coast. He traveled to the disaster zone as soon as he learned his family's residence had collapsed.
Trejo posted on Instagram that his building had collapsed and asked for prayers, saying he hoped his family might have survived. His father and brother flew from Argentina to assist firefighters, military personnel and volunteers in the search.
"Today my heart breaks into a thousand pieces," fellow Argentine player Edson Tortolero wrote on social media, expressing sympathy for Trejo.
Sport Marítimo de La Guaira issued a statement confirming the deaths and offering condolences to Trejo and his relatives. Emergency personnel continue recovery operations in the region, which remains heavily affected by the earthquakes.
