Rep. Julia Letlow defeated state Treasurer John Fleming in the Louisiana Republican Senate primary runoff, securing the party’s nomination for the November general election.

Rep. Julia Letlow emerged victorious in the Louisiana Republican Senate primary runoff, defeating state Treasurer John Fleming, according to projected results. Letlow led the initial May 16 primary with 45% of the vote, while Fleming earned 28% and incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy, who received 25%, failed to qualify for the runoff.

The former congresswoman, who has served three terms in the House and sits on the Appropriations Committee, has pledged to support President Donald Trump’s agenda in the Senate.

"I promise you this: When I get to the United States Senate, I will never back down from fighting for your America First agenda," Letlow said during a televised rally with Trump.

Letlow’s campaign highlighted her opposition to the Senate filibuster and support for the Save America Act, a measure aimed at changing election laws. She also received endorsements from Governor Jeff Landry, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Rep. Clay Higgins, as well as backing from a Trump-aligned super PAC.

Democrat Jamie Davis, a farmer, secured the Democratic nomination unopposed. Letlow is now positioned as the Republican candidate in a state that voted heavily for Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
