Thai and Cambodian Forces Exchange Fire in Escalating Border Conflict
Armed clashes between Thailand and Cambodia along their disputed border have resulted in at least 11 civilian deaths, with both sides accusing each other of violating sovereignty and international law.
Thai military forces launched airstrikes against Cambodian military positions along the disputed border on Thursday, following a series of armed clashes that left at least 11 civilians dead and dozens more affected, according to Thai authorities. The violence marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbors, who have a long history of border disputes.
Thailand's 2nd regional military command stated on social media that F-16 fighter jets were deployed and claimed to have destroyed two Cambodian military support units. Army spokesperson Col. Richa Suksuwanont said the strikes targeted only military sites. Cambodia's Defense Ministry confirmed that a Thai F-16 dropped two bombs near the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and condemned the action as a violation of international law. In a statement, the ministry asserted Cambodia's right to self-defense and pledged to respond decisively to what it described as violent aggression.
Clashes reportedly broke out at six locations along the border, resulting in civilian casualties, property damage, and the evacuation of residents in Thailand. Thai officials said six people were killed and ten injured when a Cambodian rocket struck a gas station in Kantharalak, Sisaket province. Thailand also accused Cambodian troops of firing rockets into civilian areas in Surin province, including a hospital. The Thai military condemned these attacks and stated it was prepared to take further action to protect its sovereignty and citizens.
Cambodian officials disputed Thailand's account, with Defense Ministry spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata stating that Cambodian forces acted in self-defense following an unprovoked incursion by Thai troops. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting to address the situation and urged citizens to remain calm.
The recent escalation follows a series of incidents, including landmine explosions that injured Thai soldiers and previous clashes in contested areas. Diplomatic relations have deteriorated, with Thailand recalling its ambassador from Phnom Penh and expelling the Cambodian ambassador. Both governments accuse each other of violating territorial integrity and international law. The situation remains tense, with observers warning that further confrontation is possible in the coming days.
