Russell secures Austrian Grand Prix pole after avoiding yellow-flag investigation
George Russell claimed pole for the Austrian Grand Prix, avoiding a penalty after setting his lap under single-wave yellow flags caused by Max Verstappen’s crash.
George Russell earned pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after his lap was deemed compliant with single-wave yellow-flag conditions that followed Max Verstappen’s crash at the penultimate corner. The Mercedes driver recorded a time of 1:06.113, putting him ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who posted 1:06.349, and securing his fourth pole of the season.
"I lifted at the entry into that corner and lost a lot of time," Russell said, noting that the yellow flags were single-wave rather than double-wave, which meant his lap remained valid.
Leclerc will join Russell on the front row, while Lewis Hamilton qualified third, 0.059 seconds behind his teammate. Kimi Antonelli, Russell’s teammate, fell to fourth after Verstappen’s incident forced him to abort his final lap, despite having been provisional pole with 1:06.414.
Verstappen, who had set a strong opening lap of 1:06.475, crashed and finished fifth, ahead of Lando Norris in sixth. The reigning champion qualified just ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top ten.
The session also saw several drivers affected by the incident’s timing, including Pierre Gasly, who missed the final sector and finished 11th, and several midfield teams battling for positions. Notably, debutant Cadillac cars qualified ahead of Aston Martin, while Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll occupied the back rows.
