Cape Verde advances to World Cup knockout stage after third group-stage draw

Cape Verde secured a place in the World Cup round of 32 after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia on Friday, giving the team three points and second place in Group C behind Spain. The island nation, making its tournament debut, will face defending champion Argentina in Miami on July 3.

Coach Bubista, speaking after the match, said the squad wanted to demonstrate its capabilities on the global stage and expressed pride in reaching the knockout round. Goalkeeper Vozinha, who made several key saves, noted that the team’s performance shows the quality of Cape Verdean players and their ability to compete at the highest level.

The result mirrors earlier draws for Cape Verde, including a 0-0 stalemate with Spain and a 2-2 draw against Uruguay, which together propelled the team past the group stage despite not winning a match. Saudi Arabia finished the group with two points and was eliminated.

The team's advancement marks a milestone for the nation of roughly 500,000 residents, making it the smallest country ever to progress to the World Cup knockout phase.
